The defining style of American craft beer — medium-bodied, golden to copper-colored, and built around the tropical, citrus, pine, and resinous character of American hops. Assertive bitterness and hop flavor are central; malt is a supporting player, providing just enough backbone to carry the hops. Typically 6.3–7.5% ABV.

Origin
The American IPA lineage begins with the post-Prohibition remnants of the older East Coast tradition. Ballantine’s IPA, brewed in Newark, New Jersey from 1890 until the mid-1990s, was one of the few characterful American ales to survive Prohibition — aggressively hopped, around 7.5% ABV, and aged in oak barrels for up to a year. Ballantine IPA became a reference point for early American craft brewers mining historic records for styles to recreate.
The first steps toward a distinctively American reinterpretation came in 1975, when Fritz Maytag’s Anchor Brewing Co. in San Francisco brewed Liberty Ale to mark the bicentennial of Paul Revere’s ride; the beer was bottled on June 26 of that year. Liberty Ale was dry-hopped with the newly released Cascade variety — a practice Anchor’s later brewmaster Scott Ungermann recalled as unheard-of in America at the time. Cascade’s bright citrus and grapefruit character pushed hops to the front of the beer in a way American drinkers had not encountered. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. followed in 1981 with Celebration Ale, an annual fresh-hop release that in its 1983 recipe became one of the first widely distributed American beers built around assertive Cascade and Centennial hop character — though Sierra Nevada did not formally label Celebration an IPA until 2015.
Bert Grant opened Grant’s Brewery Pub in Yakima, Washington on July 1, 1982 — the first American brewpub since Prohibition — and his Grant’s IPA was among the earliest modern craft beers to put “India Pale Ale” on a bottle label, using Pacific Northwest hops like Chinook and Cascade to define what would become the American IPA vocabulary. Through the late 1980s and 1990s the style spread from the Pacific coast eastward and became the emblematic American craft-beer style. By the 2010s it had bifurcated into the clear, bitter, resinous West Coast expression and the opaque, soft, juicy Hazy (or New England) expression, both now recognized as distinct sub-styles.
